TENS pain therapy Relieve pain with electrical currents

TENS

Short for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, the TENS therapy is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. Give TENS a go and discover how it feels to be gently ‘energised’.

The TENS therapy – also referred to as electrotherapy, electrical muscle stimulation therapy or galvanic current therapy – has been used by practitioners to help relieve pain since the 1960s. A TENS machine is a small device that is connected to the body via electrodes and generates an alternating current. The electrical impulses can cause a slight tingling sensation in the treated area.

The low-voltage alternating current is delivered to the site of the pain, triggers a response in the body and ultimately relieves the pain you feel. Thanks to this controlled, therapeutic dose of electricity, pain-carrying nerve fibres are ‘rewired’. The stimulation current generated by the TENS device interferes with and blocks the pain messages transmitted along these nerves, stopping them from reaching the brain.

Application of TENS pain therapy

A TENS treatment can last for 45 or 60 minutes. During this time, the TENS device is connected to your body and the therapist gives you a massage. The TENS therapy can provide relief for the following ailments:

  • Back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Sciatica
  • Lumbago (lower back pain)
  • Migraine
  • Chronic joint and muscle pain
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

Objectives of TENS pain therapy

Acute, localised pain is treated with pulse rates of between 50 and 150 Hz and a medium electrical current to achieve short-term pain relief. For longer-lasting results, low frequencies and a higher – yet pain-free – current are used.
